Our Story

Lapland bound
Vahca Villas is a family-run accommodation based in Muonio, Finnish Lapland. Our journey began in the summer of 2015, when we first set out to explore the vast landscapes of Lapland and discovered a place that would ultimately become our home.
Nichlas, a Canadian-Finn raised in the Rocky Mountains of Alberta, Canada, met Nina a small town girl from Eastern Finland one evening in Helsinki. Nichlas was completing his mandatory military service in Finland while Nina had moved to the 'big city' and was working as a rental coordinator. After his service, the couple spent a year living in Canada before returning to Finland in 2014.

Their connection to the north began during a five-week road trip through Eastern and Western Lapland and Northern Norway. Surrounded by endless wilderness, majestic fells, and breathtaking scenery, they instantly fell in love with the region. From that moment on, they began building a vision of creating a permanent life in the north.

The dream was simple: to create accommodation and experiences that would allow visitors to discover the beauty of the Arctic wilderness and the spectacular landscapes of the Pallas-Yllästunturi National Park.

That dream began with a small secluded lot next to the National Park in Kittilä. This first tangible step was the construction of Riekontupa, a traditional Finnish log cabin. A project filled with vision and youthful optimism turned into a five-year labour of toil and perfectionism.

By then working as a firefighter in Helsinki, Nichlas spent most of his days off traveling back and forth to Lapland to build the cabin. At its peak, this meant spending more than 120 days per year in Lapland, in addition to working 24-hour shifts at the fire station, resulting in over 200 days away from home each year.

Fortunately, both the vision and the relationship remained strong. In 2023, Riekontupa was finally completed and ready to fulfill its purpose. Today, it serves as a base for our guiding company, Fell Guides, as well as a cherished destination for guests seeking an authentic Lapland experience.

Eleven years after that first road trip, our northern vision has finally become reality.
We are now a family of four and Muonio is our home. Through Vahca Villas, together with Riekontupa and Lapinpöllö, we offer unique accommodation experiences that reflect our love for Lapland and its nature. After years of exploring the region's wilderness, we are also proud to provide guided excursions through Fell Guides, supported by a network of knowledgeable local guides who share our passion for the Arctic outdoors.
We look forward to welcoming you to experience the beauty, tranquillity, and adventure of Lapland with us.
